A – “ah” (as in car) → Pasta (PAH-stah)

E – “eh” (as in bet) → Espresso (eh-SPRESS-oh)

I – “ee” (as in pizza) → Pizza (PEE-tsah)

O – “oh” (as in note) → Molto (MOHL-toh)

U – “oo” (as in boot) → Tutto (TOOT-toh)

C + I or E = soft “ch” sound → Ciao (CHOW), Cena (CHAY-nah)

C + A, O, U = hard “k” sound → Casa (KAH-zah), Cuore (KWOH-ray)

G + I or E = soft “j” sound → Gelato (jeh-LAH-toh)

G + A, O, U = hard “g” sound → Gatto (GAH-toh), Guida (GWEE-dah)

Italian "R" sounds are slightly rolled (Roma, Arrivederci). If you can’t roll it, just soften the sound!

Double letters change meaning! Hold the sound slightly longer:

4. Il conto, per favore. – The check, please.

5. Un caffè, per favore. – A coffee, please. (This means an espresso!)

6. Acqua naturale o frizzante? – Still or sparkling water?

1. Dove si trova…? – Where is…?

2. A sinistra – To the left

3. A destra – To the right

4. Dritto – Straight ahead

5. Vicino / Lontano – Near / Far

6. Mi può aiutare? – Can you help me?

7. C’è una fermata dell’autobus/treno vicino? – Is there a bus/train stop nearby?

8. Quanto dista? – How far is it?

1. Quanto costa? – How much does it cost?

2. Accettate carte di credito? – Do you accept credit cards?

3. Avete una taglia più grande/più piccola? – Do you have a bigger/smaller size?

4. Posso provare questo? – Can I try this on?

5. Fate sconti? – Do you offer discounts?

3. Dov’è un bancomat? – Where is an ATM?

2. Ho bisogno di un dottore. – I need a doctor.

3. Mi sono perso/a. – I’m lost.

4. Parla inglese? – Do you speak English?

5. Non capisco. – I don’t understand.

6. Può ripetere, per favore? – Can you repeat that, please?

4. Dove si tiene il ricevimento? – Where is the reception?
